ceremonial mask
Inspired by Kachina costumes worn by Hopi Indian dancers in their ceremonies. Craft board masks, elastic, suede, feathers, beads, non-toxic acrylic paint and glue, brushes, instructions and patterns included. 10-5/8". The mask hides as much as it reveals, “denies as much as it affirms”, as Claude Lévi-Strauss asserted. Very often the holder of a secret, the mask conceals that which only the initiated should know. The mask’s power also lies in its capacity to incarnate spirits, a link between man and his ancestors, between the visible and the invisible world. It is inseparable from a mythical context which structures the mode of existence and thought of the majority of traditional societies. Central to the life of a group or a community, the mask, an indispensable intercessor, is always active. We hope that you find something intriguing and interesting in our gallery that will not only please your eye but also will fit into your home or office collection.

African art revolves around the human body (faces - masks and the whole body - figures and statuettes) and life and shows human nature and human activities. Very often, however, in the shape of an animal mask. Human beings are shown in three stages of their existence: birth, life and death. All stages are portrayed in traditional African sculpture expressively but modestly - this adds that extra beauty to all items from the heart of Africa.
